Making an impact on the medical field has been a passion of mine since the age of 8 when I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Since this occurred, I have gradually refined what that looks like in my life. I began thinking my impact would be in pediatric nursing, which changed to physical therapy, and has now landed on medical device development. Even this is still a broad field that needs further refining. EnableUC is a completely student-run, non-profit organization that utilizes 3D printing and other manufacturing methods to create prosthetic and assistive devices for people in need all around the United States and the world. This club has given me the opportunity to make an impact on individuals and explore the world of prosthetic design and development. Being a member of the 2022-2023 executive team as the director of internal documentation allowed me to utilize my skills in documentation to benefit this effort.

Throughout my time as director of internal documentation, I led documentation efforts that included reorganization of the club’s Microsoft Team’s directory, initiation of a new numbering system for document management, reorganizing the Gmail account, collecting insights on past club activities from prior communications, and much more. Additionally, I facilitated all communication with the general body members to ensure timely spread of important information. These efforts specific to my position allowed me to make an impact on the functionality of the club and develop my skills in documentation work.

Additionally, I served as a senior member of the See3D project team, which 3D printed models of everyday objects to give to visually impaired individuals. I was able to use my prior club experience to teach new members of the club how to use the club’s machines to 3D print various objects as well as provide transportation. Further, EnableUC was chosen to run sessions for The Better Place Project, which is an initiative run by the University of Cincinnati to engage first-year students in community service efforts alongside their learning communities. I helped teach first-year students from various backgrounds how to 3D print assistive devices.

Overall, this experience was extremely rewarding and has encouraged me to take on more responsibility in the club. I will be the director of sustaining development for the 2023-2024 school year, where I will oversee the project teams working to create prosthetic devices for clients. I am excited for this opportunity to continue to refine my leadership skills in a role that allows me to help those in my community.
