Learning Saxophone: A Journey into Musical Growth
EnableUC: Text
Music has been a fundamental part of my life for as long as I can remember. From years of private lessons for flute and piano to plays at church to organized ensembles and more, performing arts has been a constant in every season. I have also learned to love and appreciate various kinds of music. When trying to decide on my final honors experience of college, it seemed perfect to choose a challenge related to music. I had always been intrigued by the saxophone, largely due to its link to jazz music and my connection with my uncle who was a professional saxophone player for many years. Learning a reed instrument would be a challenge, but I was excited to embrace it!

The local music store in Mentor, OH where I was on co-op had a gently used saxophone that I began to rent. With the help of the guys at the shop and my uncle, I found some resources to learn the basics and create a solid technical foundation. Through countless hours of practice, watching YouTube videos, and recording myself to learn where I needed to grow, I have been progressing in my abilities and having fun at the same time. Listening to a wide variety of jazz musicians has also given me inspiration and insight into a new style.
Overall in this experience, I have loved the learning process, which is important for being a Global Citizen Scholar. Sharing progress with friends and family with a wide range of musical backgrounds has been a lot of fun, especially my uncle. Practice does not make perfect, but it certainly makes progress, which is all I can ask for. Getting to immerse myself in jazz and blues has been an enriching experience, and I will continue to explore new styles.
